In February 1961, Queen Elizabeth II, toured India, Iran, Nepal and Pakistan on her first ever tour of countries outside Europe. She arrived in Pakistan on 11th February, and was received at the airport by Govenor, Nawab Kalabagh Khan. As a staff reporter of The Pakistan Times, F E Chaudhry covered her entire visit, but only two pictures are presented here. (more…)

Pakistan won’t be capable of rooting out terrorists based along its rugged border with Afghanistan for at least three years, according to the U.S. military.
“Safe havens” in this area for al-Qaeda and Taliban militants “have grown in recent years,” according to a report to the House and Senate defense panels.
“Deficiencies in the Pakistan Army’s ability to conduct counter-insurgency operations are being addressed; however, it will take three to five years before they are realized on the battlefield,” the report said.

Shoaib Akhtar will not be allowed to play in the Indian Premier League despite being cleared by the Pakistan Cricket board, IPL chairman Lalit Modi has said, putting to rest all the speculation over the fast bowler’s participation in the tournament.
Shoaib had been banned by the Pakistan Cricket Board for five years on charges of indiscipline, but a PCB panel confirmed he was free to play outside the country.

As of Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at least 425 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures Saturday at 10 a.m. EDT.

The coalition government of Pakistan has agreed to reinstate the country’s chief justice and 60 other judges deposed last year under a controversial order by President Pervez Musharraf, a move that could threaten Musharraf’s tenuous grip on political power.
“I want to inform the entire nation that on Monday, May 12, 2008, all deposed judges will be restored,” former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, of the Pakistan Muslim League-N, said Friday during a televised news conference from Lahore.
